In 1977, the Black Liberation Front’s newspaper, *Grassroots*, exposed Wandsworth prison officers’ ties to the National Front, a white supremacist group. Liburd places this incident within the broader context of Britain’s authoritarian shift, connecting it to the racial crisis in prisons. His research reveals the impact of white supremacist movements on British society and incarceration, contributing to a deeper understanding of race and racism in British history.

“ln Africa we wear a lot of kaftan, maxi and A-line dresses because of the hot weather. After moving to England, I realised most of my dresses were underused as the weather can be so cold. Recycling these beautiful garments into tops, blouses or skirts suited the British weather, giving them another life whilst still celebrating African culture.” The fabrics we will use in this session will be donated by women from the Black African community across Manchester. When you buy your ticket, you can choose to donate to support a Repair & Sew Session so that my community can repurpose their old clothes. Valery helps her community to understand more about sustainable fashion and how easy it is to upcycle and repair clothing. The money saved from buying new could help families to eat healthy food or even to go on holiday! You will also have time to connect with others about your shared interest in sustainable fashion over tea, coffee and biscuits in Space 2 Ground Floor

Environmental Justice at Manchester Museum
As part of our commitment to building understanding between cultures and a more sustainable world, the museum is developing a programme of work around Environmental Justice led by the Social Justice and Environmental Action managers.
‘Environmental Justice’ means that everyone – regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, economic status, or ability – has the right to the same environmental protections and benefits, as well as meaningful involvement in the policies and action that shape their communities. However this has rarely been a reality for many marginalised communities, who are also at the greatest risk of being impacted by the environmental emergency we’re facing. At the same time, these voices and lived experiences have often been underrepresented in and excluded from climate and environmental action groups/movements.
This series of work aims to increase awareness and understanding of environmental injustice and its root causes through events and collaborations that give space and priority to marginalised voices. Many of these events and opportunities will be open to all, whilst some will prioritise or only be available to people from marginalised communities to take part in. This is so they can engage with the topic in a ‘safer’ space where for example, racism or ableism present within wider movements that make them inaccessible is less likely to be present.
