Unlocking the Potential of Global Majority Nurses and Midwives North Conference
Rising Together: Global Majority Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Conference
Date: Thursday 5th February 2026
Location: Manchester
Theme: Rising Together
The Rising Together Conference is a bold and transformative one-day event focused on advancing equity in nursing and midwifery leadership. It brings together Global Majority professionals, educators, and system leaders to spotlight good practices, confront persistent barriers, and co-create solutions for meaningful change, particularly across the North of England where leadership representation remains disproportionately low.
Grounded in lived experience and collective expertise, the conference will explore what works, what holds us back, and what must change to ensure Global Majority nurses and midwives are not only present but empowered in leadership roles. It also supports organisations in meeting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) targets and progressing against the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES), with a focus on sustainable, system-wide accountability.

Why This Conference Across the NHS, leadership programmes have multiplied but their impact has not been felt equally. Global Majority nurses and midwives continue to be excluded from senior decision-making spaces, despite their expertise, resilience, and frontline contributions. The leadership gap is not a reflection of capability. It is a reflection of systems that have failed to evolve. Rising Together is a direct response to this inequity and to the persistent disparities highlighted by the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES). WRES data continues to show that Global Majority staff are underrepresented in senior roles, disproportionately subject to disciplinary action, and less likely to access leadership development opportunities. These are not isolated issues, they are systemic. This conference is a space to pause, interrogate, and reimagine. We will examine whether current leadership programmes are delivering on their promise, highlight the journeys of those who have broken through, and confront the barriers that persist. We will ask: Are we building leadership pathways that reflect the diversity of our workforce, or are you reinforcing the status quo? Rising Together centres those most affected. It invites honest dialogue, strategic reflection, and collaborative action. Together, we aim to co-create solutions that make leadership development inclusive, accountable, and fit for purpose not in theory, but in practice. With support from NHS England and alignment with national frameworks including WRES Rising Together is a catalyst for visibility, equity, and transformation across the North of England and beyond.
Across the North of England, thousands of nurses and midwives from Global Majority backgrounds serve
at the heart of our health systems in hospitals, communities, care homes, and clinics. They are essential to patient care, cultural safety, and workforce resilience. Yet despite their growing presence, they remain systemically underrepresented in senior leadership roles.
Over the past decade, numerous leadership programmes have emerged across the NHS. But the question remains: Are they working for everyone? Are they dismantling structural barriers or simply reinforcing them?
This conference is a timely and strategic response, supported by NHS England, to address the leadership gap and build a future where Global Majority professionals are not only present, but leading, shaping, and transforming the system.
