WINDRUSH DAY 2021
Virtual Windrush Celebration Event
Date: Saturday 26th June 2021 Time: 13:00hrs – 16:00hrs
The event will be held on Zoom with live streaming to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram platforms of CAHN.
The Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) launched The Windrush Day Event in 2018 and it has been an annual celebration that occurs each summer.
The event’s aim is to celebrate historical achievers, mainly including the Windrush generation, who travelled on the Empire Windrush in 1948. This is to acknowledge all their contributions to society today.
The event was inspired from the Windrush scandal that happened back in 2018. This occurrence saw many Caribbean residents deprived of their benefits in the UK, therefore sparking outrage in communities across the nation. As CAHN aims to tackle injustices in the African and Caribbean community, it was only right to respond to the scandal in a positive light. Consequently, we celebrate the achievements of the Windrush generation and others from the Black community to reflect on their past and present struggles, and to honour their successes.
Windrush Day June 2021
For the event, CAHN are gathering numerous members of the community to celebrate our differences, with this year’s theme being: ‘Windrush: our shared history, culture and heritage.’
CAHN want to highlight the combinations of cultures that have evolved into our shared heritage today as a nation. This will be captured through songs, food segments, clothes, art, performances from multi-generations, poems, interviews and phenomenal guest speakers. This ensures that the diverse nature of our joint history as a collective of communities is expressed.
This year, there will be a focus on the importance of storytelling- meaning that empowering stories will be told both to rediscover and unfold key moments in history. The significant journeys community leaders have been on will also be highlighted.
