Black History Month

Black History Month 2025 | 80 Years Since the Pan-African Congress

Greater Manchester Black History Month Civic launch brought together 200+ attendees at the Manchester Monastery for an evening of unity, culture, and inspiration in celebration of 80 years of the 5th Pan-African Congress which took place in Manchester. Hosted by Rob Brown and held in collaboration with Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

The evening opened with Professor Faye Ruddock Chair of CAHN reflecting on the Congress’s legacy, followed by powerful contributions from leaders including Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, who spoke on Manchester’s historic role in global change and its ongoing values of diversity and collaboration. Other speakers included Paul Griffiths DL Esq, Lord Bishop David Walker, Lisa Samuels, Kwame Asamoah Kwarteng, Kathy Cowell OBE DL, and Charles Kwaku-Odoi DL.

Stall holders such as Diabetes UK, NHS Blood & Transplant, GM Fire & Rescue, Transport For Greater Manchester and others connected with the community, while the programme was brought to life through dynamic performances from Najia Vibes, MGTY Macharia, a show-stopping fashion showcase by Soorente, and the uplifting sounds of the Love World Choir.

A historic night at Gorton in celebration of our shared history, community spirit, and a renewed commitment to positive change across Greater Manchester and beyond.
